5 Ways to Give Back During the Holidays

The holiday season is the perfect time to share what you have with others. Make your community a brighter place by joining Hickory Farms and giving back during the holidays in these five ways.

Donate your household items

Items that you no longer use can be a welcome addition to another home. Donating your items to charitable organizations helps you recycle your goods, while the funds that are raised through their purchase go toward programs to help low income families, such as job training and resume preparation.

Volunteer your time

Make a day of service an annual part of your holiday celebration. Gather your family together and read about the various philanthropic charities working in your area. Then, decide how you can best give back. Whether you would like to serve food at a homeless shelter or organize baskets of toys for children in need, volunteering with your kids can teach them important life lessons.

Drop off a gift

Expand your holiday gift list to include a few people that you don’t know. Stop by a local hospital ward or a retirement home with a festive gift basket to share delicious treats and a few laughs. You are sure to make someone’s holiday season a little more special and come home with a few new friends.

Cook a feast for the hungry

Family dinners are an important part of any celebration. Share the joy of a great meal with less fortunate individuals in your region by packaging up holiday meals and handing them out to the homeless.

Join Hickory Farms and No Kid Hungry on Giving Tuesday

Hickory Farms invites all of our customers to join us in the fight against childhood hunger. We’ve designated Dec. 2 as “Giving Day,” and we encourage everyone to mark their calendars and make a donation of $1, $3, $5, or $10 to Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry® campaign, which works to help end childhood hunger in the U.S.

It’s hard to believe that more than 16 million children in the U.S. go to bed hungry, but poverty and lack of resources are making this situation a reality for many families. Part of the problem stems from a lack of awareness about the issue. To combat this, Hickory Farms will be hosting a Twitter discussion on Dec. 1st to help raise awareness at home.

Past efforts by Hickory Farms to raise funds include Taste of the Nation Toledo, among many others. For the past six years, we’ve been active partners with No Kid Hungry, working to make a difference in the lives of hungry families. Together with our customers, Hickory Farms’ partnership with the campaign has raised over $3.3 million dollars. These donations have gone a long way towards funding worthwhile community programs that provide emergency food aid, summer meal programs, education about nutrition and other long-term solutions for families in crisis. If you would like to learn more about how you can help out, visit No Kid Hungry’s website.

As you prepare to share the holidays with beloved family members and friends, it’s important to reach out to those less fortunate in our community. Giving locally can help combat hunger and poverty right in your own hometown. Remember that each of us can make a positive contribution to childhood hunger by donating to a worthy cause this holiday season.

The Appetizer

Fight off hunger with a couple yummy Chicken Bites. These are easy to share with your friends and family. Start by cutting up pieces of boneless chicken breast into chunks. Then, give the chicken a little bath in buttermilk before tossing it in crushed crackers, like our Olive Oil & Rosemary Crackers, mixed with a bit of flour, salt and pepper. Pan fry the chicken in hot oil and serve your cute little bites with a side of our Honey & Pineapple Mustard, or try our Chipotle Ranch Sauce.

The Salad

Since lettuce doesn’t tend to travel well, pasta-based salads are a great alternative for a picnic salad. Cook and drain your pasta as you sauté a variety of fresh seasonal veggies, such as garlic, onions, peppers, zucchini and squash. Add a dash of white wine and fresh cooked black beans, then continue to simmer for 10 minutes. Finish by combining the pasta and veggies with a big scoop of pesto sauce and diced pieces of our Beef Summer Sausage.

The Entree

No picnic is complete without a delicious sandwich. For a simple gourmet treat, stop by your local bakery and choose a fresh baked artisan loaf. Spread our Horseradish Sauce on one slice of bread, and then top it with a pile of thinly sliced roast beef, pieces of our Peppercorn White Cheddar and a heap of caramelized onions.
