Traditional Caramel Apples

Coated in a delicious sugary topping, sometimes a classic Caramel Apple truly hits the spot. To create your yummy seasonal treat, start by washing a few of our Fuji apples well before placing a Popsicle stick through the bottom. Let the apples rest on a buttered baking sheet while you whip up the topping by melting vanilla caramel and a bit of cream.

Once the caramel is melted, dip each apple into the coating, making sure everything is well-covered. Then, before the caramel hardens, roll your apple in a bowl filled with the topping of your choice, such as our mixed nuts, toasted coconut, or miniature chocolate chips.

A Little Zesty

If you’re looking for something a bit more unique, top your apples with vibrant orange zest. Start by making the classic caramel apples above. While the caramel is melting, take a couple of our Navel Oranges and use a small vegetable peeler to create long strings of zest. After dipping your apples, roll them in the zest before sprinkling on a bit of honey for a little extra sweetness.

Extra Crunchy

One of the best reasons to munch on caramel apples is to experience the great textural contrast of a crisp apple paired with sticky caramel. You can amp up the crunch even more by adding whole nuts to the outside of your apple. Whether you prefer whole peanuts or our whole almonds, packing nuts on top of your apple will really make them sing.

Our Favorite Oktoberfest-Inspired Recipes

Oktoberfest and its festivities date back to the day when Bavarian Crown Prince Louis married Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The events that followed were repeated again the next year and soon became a favorite annual celebration starting at the end of September and ending on the first Sunday in October.

Now that September is coming to an end, you can bring this fantastic tradition into your home with a few Oktoberfest-inspired recipes featuring our gourmet Hickory Farms ingredients.

Oktoberfest Bread

Cheddar, sausage and bread are important components of any Oktoberfest celebration. Rather than just making a traditional sandwich, try combining all of these ingredients into one amazing loaf of bread. Start by sautéing chunks of our Beef Summer Sausage in a skillet until they reach a nice golden brown. Then, in a large bowl, combine flour, salt and baking powder before mixing in an egg and a bit of honey. Finally, finish by folding the beer, sausage and plenty of our Farmhouse Cheddar into the loaf before baking.

Beer Cheese Soup

Featuring a creamy texture with light and fruity flavors, a good beer cheese soup is an excellent dish to serve with bread. Start by browning bacon, and then use the fat to cook some onions, carrots, celery and chopped Fuji apples from our gourmet fruit baskets. Cook until the onion is translucent. Next, add in garlic, salt, pepper, cayenne, dried mustard and paprika. Then, reduce the heat before tossing in plenty of our Farmhouse Cheddar along with some beer, milk and chicken stock. Lastly, cook until the soup thickens.
