Make the crust

As the base for the decadent filling, the crust is an important component of any cake. Make yours by tossing together a scoop of rolled oats, a handful of our chopped mixed nuts, a bit of brown sugar and some melted butter. Then, place a spoonful of the mixture into muffin tins lined with baking cups. Use your fingers to pat down the mixture, and then bake the crust for about eight minutes to set.

Mix up the filling

Now, it’s time to make the filling. Using an electric stand mixer, whip room-temperature cream cheese until it’s smooth and airy. Then, slowly mix in an egg. For something a little unexpected, add an intriguing savory element, like blue cheese, that will complement the pears. Finish by adding even more creaminess with a scoop of sour cream. Spoon the blue cheese-tinged cheesecake mixture on top of your prepared crust and bake until just slightly puffy.

Time for the topping

To make the toffee pears, start by melting a dab of butter before mixing in brown sugar and cream. While continuously stirring, cook the sweet mixture until it begins to bubble. When it reaches the point of bubbling, add some sliced Red and Green D’Anjou Pears. Lastly, cook the pears until tender and then remove from the heat before adding a dash of vanilla.

Improve your immune system

Blueberries are absolutely brimming with antioxidants. In fact, they contain the highest concentration of antioxidants of any fruit or vegetable that has been tested. These amazing components neutralize free radicals in your body, giving your immune system a serious boost. The pigment in blueberries, known as anthocyanin, is responsible for both the beautiful blue color of the berries and many of the health benefits.

Maintain brain function

Blueberries aren’t only good for your body; they’re also good for your mind. As you age, you can begin to lose memory function and the ability to control your emotions. Anthocyanins can help reverse this, improving memory and brain function. One study found that participants who were given blueberry juice scored higher on a memory test than those that were not.

Preserve eyesight

Have you noticed that you’re having a harder time seeing clearly? Blueberries may be able to help. Clinical studies have found that blueberries can slow vision loss.

Get your vitamin C

Blueberries have so much vitamin C that they contain nearly 25 percent of your recommended daily allowance of this important nutrient. Vitamin C is credited with improving everything from glaucoma to gum health to immune system function.

Reduce your risk of heart disease

Blueberries are so amazing; they’ve even been shown to improve cardiovascular health. Studies have revealed that diets rich in blueberries have been linked to reduced cardiovascular inflammation, which lowers the chances of heart attacks or heart failure.

Host a Patriotic Block Party for Independence Day

A good way to get to know your neighbors this Fourth of July is to host a patriotic block party, and Hickory Farms has a few entertaining tips to get you started!

If your neighborhood has a community gathering spot – like a clubhouse, pool, or ball field – make that your central location. If not, each family can pitch in offerings from their grills and turn it into a long, meandering block of camaraderie.

Decorations

Red, white and blue decorations are a necessity, of course! And fly those flags high for our country’s 238th birthday. The beauty of a festive block party is its individuality, so make sure to do your own creative thing.

Activities

A neighborhood parade can be the day’s highlight and involve everyone from tots and teens to proud veterans. Organize a small parade with decorated bikes, wagons, 4-wheelers and golf carts interspersed with walking groups and maybe even a few horn players and drummers! You probably don’t need a city permit, but a larger parade involving vehicles might, so be sure to check first.

Kids enjoy sack races and a good game of horseshoes. You can even get adults involved with a pick-up softball game before the fireworks begin.
