Put a Fresh Spin on Candy Apples

With fall upon us, apple season is about to be in full swing. Sweet, crisp and delicious, apples make the perfect base for some of the best seasonal treats. Take advantage of our Hickory Farms gourmet fruit and nut baskets by making a unique variation on the classic caramel apple.

Traditional Caramel Apples

Coated in a delicious sugary topping, sometimes a classic Caramel Apple truly hits the spot. To create your yummy seasonal treat, start by washing a few of our Fuji apples well before placing a Popsicle stick through the bottom. Let the apples rest on a buttered baking sheet while you whip up the topping by melting vanilla caramel and a bit of cream.

Once the caramel is melted, dip each apple into the coating, making sure everything is well-covered. Then, before the caramel hardens, roll your apple in a bowl filled with the topping of your choice, such as our mixed nuts, toasted coconut, or miniature chocolate chips.

A Little Zesty

If you’re looking for something a bit more unique, top your apples with vibrant orange zest. Start by making the classic caramel apples above. While the caramel is melting, take a couple of our Navel Oranges and use a small vegetable peeler to create long strings of zest. After dipping your apples, roll them in the zest before sprinkling on a bit of honey for a little extra sweetness.

Extra Crunchy

One of the best reasons to munch on caramel apples is to experience the great textural contrast of a crisp apple paired with sticky caramel. You can amp up the crunch even more by adding whole nuts to the outside of your apple. Whether you prefer whole peanuts or our whole almonds, packing nuts on top of your apple will really make them sing.

Harvest Festival

If you live in a region that’s still relatively warm in October, host a harvest party outside. Set up a long table decorated with red and orange tablecloths, pumpkins and fall-hued leaves. If possible, try to have a bonfire roaring in the background. For dinner, serve seasonal fruits, including our apples, peaches and nectarines, paired with cinnamon-flavored whipped cream. For something a little heartier, make a couple sandwiches with our HoneyGold Ham.

Oatmeal Dried Fruit Cookies

Add some extra flavor to traditional oatmeal cookies with the addition of some dried fruit. If your mixture of oats, butter, egg, vanilla is too dry, add a splash of some almond milk to the mix. Bake the batter on an ungreased cookie sheet for approximately 10 minutes in an oven preheated to 375°. Let them cool on the cookie sheet for five minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Cashew Cookies

These nutty favorites taste even richer with the addition of sour cream and some chopped up Hickory Farms cashews. However, the real decadence lies with the burned butter frosting. Melt butter over medium heat until light brown, then add some heavy cream, confectioner’s sugar and vanilla and spread on the cooled cookies. These deliciously rich treats are sure to get rave reviews at your next harvest gathering.

Nutty Butter Cookies

Try lifestyle maven Martha Stewart’s nutty butter cookie recipe, which can be tailored to please any palate. Select your favorite nut for the batch — anything from peanuts to roasted pistachios can be added. Martha’s secret for flavorful cookies is to first toast the oats in butter and then add them to the rest of the ingredients. Her recipe makes two dozen cookies, but could easily be doubled or tripled for a large gathering.
