Although pecans are great when tossed into salads, mixed into trail mix and crusted on chicken – they always seem to taste better when baked into a mouth-watering pie. Since Pecan Pie Day is coming up on July 12, now’s the perfect time to bake your very own pie! Invite your friends over for a tasty celebration and prepare a classic version of this decadent treat, or put a fun twist on the traditional recipe with our Hickory Farms mixed nuts. The Classic For pecan pie purists, go with the traditional, old-fashioned southern recipe. Start by preparing basic pie dough and forming it into a round pie pan. Crimp the edges of the dough for a nice, clean presentation. Then, place the dough into the refrigerator and allow it to firm up. Meanwhile, in a medium sauce pan, melt butter before whisking in some brown sugar until the mixture is smooth. Then, add corn syrup, vanilla, a little salt and a pinch of orange zest. In a separate bowl, mix three beaten eggs into the butter mixture. Finally, add your pecans to the crust, top with the rest of the ingredients and then bake. Pecan Cheesecake Pie If you’re looking …

Host a Patriotic Block Party for Independence Day

RU192010.jpg.rendition.largest

A good way to get to know your neighbors this Fourth of July is to host a patriotic block party, and Hickory Farms has a few entertaining tips to get you started! If your neighborhood has a community gathering spot – like a clubhouse, pool, or ball field – make that your central location. If not, each family can pitch in offerings from their grills and turn it into a long, meandering block of camaraderie. Decorations Red, white and blue decorations are a necessity, of course! And fly those flags high for our country’s 238th birthday. The beauty of a festive block party is its individuality, so make sure to do your own creative thing. Activities A neighborhood parade can be the day’s highlight and involve everyone from tots and teens to proud veterans. Organize a small parade with decorated bikes, wagons, 4-wheelers and golf carts interspersed with walking groups and maybe even a few horn players and drummers! You probably don’t need a city permit, but a larger parade involving vehicles might, so be sure to check first. Kids enjoy sack races and a good game of horseshoes. You can even get adults involved with a pick-up softball game before the fireworks begin. Refreshments …
